My dear teacher and fellows,
How are you? What news?
I began to read our new book: "The Picture of Dorian Gray" by Oscar Wilde this week. As I have read only 4 chapters I decided to read more firstly and then to post it. But our dear teacher is looking forward to our impressions so I'll do it right now. The book is interesting because it managed to catch my attention and interest. After the reading of its beginnnig I became more interested in it. It's so captivating that when you read it we want to read further and further to learn other things that will happen to the characters. I can only supposed that there is something wrong with this picture and this young man. Maybe this picture will bring fame, renown, celebrity to him or unhappiness, ruin to him. I don't know. We'll see!
So,I would like to tell you about what I've managed to read.I discovered some characters. For example, there are major characters as : Dorian Gray,Lord Henry Wotton, the painter Basil Hallward and there also are some minor characters as: Dorian's sweetheart Sybil Vane. I am sure that there are some other characters but I will find out about them when I read more.
"The Picture of Dorian Gray" is the story of one beautiful, innocent young man's seduction or charm. I discovered our three major characters at the beginning of the book, when painter Basil Hallward and his close friend,Lord Henry Wotton are discussing the subject of Basil's newest painting,a gorgeous young man named Dorian Gray. Basil and Henry discuss just how perfectly "perfect" Dorian is – he's totally innocent and completely good. Lord Henry wants to meet this mysterious boy,but Basil doesn't want him to; for some reason,he's afraid of what will happen to Dorian if Lord Henry meets Dorian.
However,Lord Henry gets his wish – Dorian shows up that very afternoon, and, over the course of the day, Henry manages totally to change Dorian's perspective on the world. He begins to see life as Lord Henry does,as a succession of pleasures in which questions of good and evil are unrelated.
Basil finishes his portrait and gives it to Dorian who keeps it in his home where he can admire his own beauty. Lord Henry continues to execute his influence over Dorian,to Basil's dismay. Dorian grows more and more distant from Basil, his former best friend, and develops his own interests. One of these interests is Sybil Vane,a young, very beautiful, very talented and very poor actress. Though she's stuck performing in a terrible theatre, she is a truly remarkable artist and her talent and beauty win over Dorian. He falls dramatically in love with her and she with him. For a moment,it seems like everything will be wonderfully. However, this is only the beginning of Dorian's story. Once he and Sybil are engaged, her talent suddenly disappears. She is so overcome with her passionate love for Dorian that none of her roles on stage seem important to her anymore.
Guys, unfortunately this is all that I've read this week. But,anyway,it's interesting for me to learn about Dorian and Sybil's love and happiness. Will they be happy toghether? Will they marry? Who knows! Maybe! I thing that Dorian will lose the interest towards Sybil because her talent disappears and that is not good. I'll read and find out about this fact. What about you guys? Do you like the book?
Yours truly,
A.G.
